Forget about Hollywood! Some of the biggest movies to hit the big screen have been filmed right here in good ol’ Berkeley County. We’ve included many of them below.
- The Patriot (2000): Starring Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger, the movie depicts the life of a peaceful farmer named Benjamin Martin who is driven to lead the Colonial Militia during the American Revolution when a sadistic British officer murders his son.
- Cold Mountain (2003): Starring Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger, the movie is centered around the American Civil War as a wounded soldier embarked on a perilous journey back home to Cold Mountain, North Carolina to reunite with his sweetheart.
- The Notebook (2004): Starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, the movie told a story of two North Carolina teens, Landon Carter and Jamie Sullivan, who are thrown together after Landon gets into trouble and is made to do community service while falling in love in the 1940s.
- The Tempest (1998): An adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic, starring Katherine Heigel, is set in the Mississippi bayous during the Civil War.
- Die Hard: With A Vengeance (1995): Starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, John McClane and a Harlem store owner are targeted by German terrorist Simon Gruber in New York City, where he plans to rob the Federal Reserve Building.
- The Yearling (1994): In 1870s Florida, a rural family struggles to survive. A lonely twelve-year-old son, Jody (Wil Horneff), the lone surviving child, against his mother’s better judgment eventually persuades his parents to allow him a pet fawn, which Jody grows to love deeply. Tragic conflict arises when the fawn begins eating the family’s food crops.
- Consenting Adults (1992): Starring Kevin Kline, Richard and Priscilla Parker’s lives take a turn for the better when Eddy and Kay move into the house next door. Eddy’s a risk taker and shows his new neighbors how to enjoy life at the expense of a rule or convention or two. What Richard doesn’t realize is that Eddy’s little games are just a prelude to something that’s intended to destroy his neighbors’ lives.
- Voodoo Dawn (1990): College buddies and a migrant worker (Gina Gershon) find black magic happening at a Southern plantation.
- Made in Heaven (1987): The movie stars singer Tom Petty, Tim Daly and Timothy Hutton to name a few. After being dumped by his girlfriend, a boy runs away to California. But he ends up in heaven because he dies after trying to help a family from drowning in a river. In heaven he’ll meet a beautiful girl, who has never reincarnated before.
10. Swamp Thing (1982): Directed by horror-mastermind Wes Craven, after a violent incident with a special chemical, a research scientist is turned into a swamp creature
