GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–According to a spokesperson with the local chapter of the American Red Cross, disaster-trained volunteers assisted thirteen adults and two children displaced by an apartment fire early Saturday morning that caused major damage to two units and minor damage to two adjoining units of the Springhill Apartments in Goose Creek.
Red Cross officials say the organization is meeting the immediate needs of those residents impacted by the blaze by providing financial assistance for temporary lodging, food and clothing.
Red Cross volunteers also gave comfort kits with personal hygiene items and referrals for their long-term recovery assistance.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Because of trained volunteers and financial assistance from the community, Red Cross officials say the organization was able to assist more than 5,700 people affected by disasters in South Carolina last year.
On average, the American Red Cross, Palmetto SC Region, which serves the state of South Carolina, responds to a disaster every four hours.
