BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.– Christopher Swetckie, principal of Howe Hall AIMS in Goose Creek, will sleep on the roof of the school building Thursday, October 30, 2014 beginning at 8 p.m. to recognize the more than 150 students who met the summer reading challenge.
For the last three years, Swetckie has issued a challenge to the students of Howe Hall AIMS to complete their summer reading bingo-style cards, the READ-O Challenge. Students get a card that includes their reading level. The school also attaches suggestions for parents about how they can access e-books that are appropriate for their child’s reading level.
Swetckie then meets with a representative group of students to determine what challenge he must accept in recognition of the students who complete the READ-O Challenge.
Explaining this year’s challenge and how he wanted to recognize the students’ achievement, Swetckie said, “the kids really wanted me to sleep on the roof for my challenge and I wanted to be a good sport and celebrate that more than a third of my kids completed the summer reading. So I’m going to climb up there and sleep in my tent overnight and they’ll get a good laugh and it’s all to celebrate their achievement.”
This is the second year in a row the students have challenged Swetckie to sleep on the roof of the school building. The first year, Swetckie received a pie in the face. Along with choosing Swetckie’s challenge, the students will also receive a READ-O certificate at the first quarter awards ceremony on November 3.
Students of Howe Hall AIMS will find Thursday night exciting not only because of Swetckie’s challenge, but also because the school will hold several different fall festivities.
The AIMS Players & Dance Company will present the Boo Review at 6 p.m., followed by a PTA meeting with a student and parent costume contest, a pumpkin silent auction and a few other activities.
Christopher Swetckie is entering his fourth year of service as the principal of Howe Hall AIMS. Prior to joining the Berkeley County School District, Swetckie served as the principal of St. James-Santee Elementary and McClellanville Middle School.
Swetckie has been the chair of the Arts in Basic Curriculum’s Peer to Peer Network for the last three years, was nominated as a Principal of the Year candidate for Berkeley County School District in 2014 and was recognized by the College of Charleston’s Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society as their Honored Educator of the Year in 2014. Under Swetckie’s leadership, Howe Hall AIMS has continued its traditions of excellence in both academics and the arts for all students.
