BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a federal grant to help combat DUI traffic accidents through the South Carolina Department of Public Safety for the third consecutive year, according to BCSO spokesperson Dan Moon. This year’s grant totaled $62,569.
The sheriff’s office was first awarded a federal grant back in 2010 to enforce DUI laws and combat the high number of fatal vehicle accidents.
Since the implementation of the program, Moon says Berkeley County has seen a significant decrease in the number of fatal vehicle accidents and fatal accidents associated with impaired drivers.
He added that the officer assigned to the program enforces all traffic laws, in an effort to decrease DUI related traffic fatalities, collisions and injuries.
Moon says another essential part of the program is the need for public awareness on the impact of DUI. Public awareness has proven to be valuable through educational training. The designate officer educates various communities, schools, civic groups, churches and businesses on the impact of DUI.
According to Moon, Sheriff W. Dewitt acknowledges that through DUI educational training and awareness, Berkeley County has seen a significant decrease in DUI related fatal traffic collisions. With the additional grant, Berkeley County will experience a greater decline in DUI related occurrences.
