GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler signed a proclamation declaring November “South Carolina Native American Heritage Month” in the City of Goose Creek.
Mayor Heitzler met with Tribal Administrator, Lisa Collins, to sign the proclamation which recognizes the contributions of American Indians, Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiians in the State of South Carolina.
There is one tribal community based in Berkeley County, The Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians.
The tribe organized and incorporated (chartered) in the State of South Carolina and maintains the history, culture, lifestyles and unique heritage of South Carolina Native American people.
From ancient times to present, Native American Indians have called Berkeley County, St. James Parish, Goose Creek, their home.
From various Native American Indian tribal cultures and bands throughout history including: Ashepoo, Cape Fear Indians, Catawba, Cheraw, Cherokee, Edisto, Escamacu, Etiwan, Iroquois, Kussoe, Kiawah, Pamlico, Pee Dee, Santee, Saraws, Sewee, Stono, Tuscarora, Waccamaw, Wando, Wassamasaw and Winyah. Many of these Native American’s descendants still reside in South Carolina and in the Goose Creek area today.
