Governor Nikki Haley issued a statewide proclamation Friday designating November 14, 2014 as World Diabetes Day in South Carolina. The Governor’s Mansion was also lit blue in recognition of this day.
Approximately 800,000 South Carolinians are affected by type 1 or type 2 diabetes and more than 250 million people around the world suffer from diabetes with only 25-50 percent being aware of their illness.
The governor’s proclamation comes as a part of a worldwide effort to raise awareness of the importance of prevention, diagnosis, and management of diabetes.
In an effort to ensure that the disease does not go undiagnosed and that those affected can receive proper treatment, Gov. Haley urges South Carolinians to be aware of type 1 diabetes and its symptoms, which often first appear in childhood.
The governor also encourages citizens to make healthy lifestyle decisions in order to diminish the effects of type 2 diabetes, which can be managed by maintaining a healthy weight, diet and by exercising regularly.
