BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Cane Bay High chorus director William Bennett has gone from one of the 25 semifinalists to a top 10 finalist for the ‘Grammy Award for Music Educators.’
For the second year, the organization will recognize a music educator who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrates a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools.
This year 7,000 nominations were submitted from all 50 states. Bennett is the only music educator from South Carolina to make the list of finalists.
One recipient is selected from ten finalists each year, and will be recognized for his/her remarkable impact on students’ lives.
The winner will be flown to Los Angeles to accept the award, attend the 2015 Grammy Awards ceremony and receive a $10,000 honorarium.
The nine finalists will each receive a $1,000 honorarium, and the schools of all 10 finalists also will receive matching grants.
During the 2009-2010 school year, Bennett was named “Teacher of the Year.” Originally from Fort Mill, South Carolina, he currently calls Summerville home. He has been teaching for approximately the last decade.
