BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Sheriff Wayne DeWitt was arrested shortly before 6 a.m. on Sunday for DUI and leaving the scene of a wreck.
He was booked into the Al Detention Center approximately three hours later.
According to Sgt. Bob Beres with the S.C. Highway Patrol, DeWitt was traveling in his county-issued vehicle when the incident occurred in the area of Red Bank Road and Henry E. Brown Boulevard.
Troopers say DeWitt’s Ford pickup struck another vehicle, sending the occupants to the hospital. Beres stated that he wasn’t sure how many people were in the second vehicle at the time.
Beres says Hanahan Police eventually stopped DeWitt at Bankton Circle where he was arrested. He stated that Hanahan Police has dashcam video of the incident.
Troopers gave the 63-year-old sheriff a field sobriety test and reportedly determined he was under the influence. Beres added that DeWitt refused a breathalyzer test when he was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center in Charleston Cannon.
DeWitt was released Sunday night on a personal recognizance bond.
He’s been the sheriff of Berkeley County for approximately twenty years.
