BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–A little more than a week after his arrest for DUI, Sheriff Wayne DeWitt issued a statement Monday regarding the incident.

“First of all let me begin by stating I am deeply sorry for the embarrassment my recent conduct has caused the citizens of Berkeley County and the employees of the Sheriff’s Office,” DeWitt stated.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Sheriff Wayne DeWitt was arrested shortly before 6 a.m. on December 28th for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a wreck.

He was booked into the Al Detention Center approximately three hours later.

According to Sgt. Bob Beres with the S.C. Highway Patrol, DeWitt was traveling in his county-issued vehicle when the incident occurred in the area of Red Bank Road and Henry E. Brown Boulevard.

Troopers say DeWitt’s Ford pickup struck another vehicle, sending 21-year-old Robert Gonzales to the hospital.

“I know I have greatly disappointed my family, my friends, my staff and my constituents. I accept full responsibility for my conduct,” DeWitt added.  “I will accept whatever outcome the judicial process determines to be appropriate. In the meantime, I intend to devote my best efforts to discharging the duties of the office of Sheriff of Berkeley County and restoring the public’s trust in me.”

On January 2nd, DeWitt was secretly sworn into office, rather than take the oath of office publicly.
