STEPHEN, S.C.—According to authorities a house fire in St. Stephen has left one man dead.
At approximately 8:36 a.m. on Monday, fire crews were dispatched to 500 Beulah Tabernacle Drive in St. Stephen in reference to a structure fire with entrapment.
Multiple agencies arrived on scene to battle the flames including the Bonneau Fire Department, St. Stephen Fire Department and Forty-One Rural.
Firefighters stated that when they arrived on scene the home was completely engulfed in flames.
Crews eventually found the victim dead near the front door.
The Berkeley Co. Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 58-year-old Harry Lee Middleton.
His body was transported to MUSC for an autopsy. Results of the autopsy showed that his death was caused from smoke inhalation. Coroner Bill Salisbury says his death has been ruled accidental.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is currently investigating the fire.
