BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—On Monday night, Berkeley County Council passed the controversial chicken ordinance.
The ordinance allows fours hens on residential lots of 30,000 square feet or less and an extra hen for an additional 1,500 square feet of lot for a total of up to 8 hens.
Berkeley County code law enforcement officers will be tasked with investigating complaints involving violations of the ordinance.
If anyone is caught violating the ordinance, officers have the authority to serve a written notice, warning or violation fine in the amount of $1,082.
The chicken ordinance requires permits to be obtained to keep hens on property. Government officials say there is no fee for this type of permit.
