Acting Berkeley County Sheriff Rick Ollic issued the following statement on his first day after assuming the duties of sheriff following the resignation Wayne DeWitt:
“I thank Mr. DeWitt for his many years of service to our community and am hopeful that his 40 year commitment and service will be what the people of Berkeley County remember, not one mistake.
When I was sworn in as a deputy 28 years ago, I took an oath to preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States and the State of South Carolina. That oath remains today as I assume the position of interim sheriff until such time as Governor Haley appoints someone to fill the vacancy.
I will continue to execute my duties, vigilantly enforce the criminal laws of the state and county and to bring punishment to those who violate them.
I will continue to lead an incredible group of deputies in serving and protecting the citizens of Berkeley County and to build upon the great relationships I already have with county employees, council and the supervisor’s office to ensure the smoothest transition possible.”
