BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Doc Williams SPCA is running extra low on space after 66 Shar-Pei dogs were recently surrendered to the shelter. The dogs’ ages range from one to 13-years-old and desperately in need of some TLC.
According to shelter officials, the dogs currently lack basic veterinary care, and a large number suffer from inherited traits that result in hearing loss and blindness when left unchecked. The wrinkles, they say, that make this breed’s face so adorable can grow faster than the skull and cover the eye. When this happens, it can require entropion surgery to expose the eyes.
Shelter workers say the dogs were originally bred for resale by a local breeder. Many of them even have their American Kennel Club papers.
Shelter veterinary surgeons will reportedly be performing surgery on Wednesday, February 18 in order to prepare these dogs for adoption into forever homes. All dogs will be spayed or neutered, up to date on shots and micro-chipped prior to going to a new home.
Foster homes are needed for several older dogs needing more extensive care. Donations to defray the treatment costs may be made on our secure “Donate Now” button at www.docwilliamsspca.org .
Eight of these dogs are already available for adoption and may be seen at 502 Cypress Gardens Rd., Moncks Corner, SC. Noon to 6pm daily.
