BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for the position of reserve deputy.
The qualified candidates will receive training at the Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s Office by certified instructors with the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
The training will be approximately five months in length with classes held on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00 P.M. until 10:00 P.M. and several all day sessions on Saturdays starting April 6th 2015.
Upon completion of the course, candidates must attend the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and pass a 100 test question pertaining to South Carolina laws, hypothetical situations in the field, courtroom procedures, etc.
During training, candidates must also pass a rigorous firearms course using either a Glock 22 or Glock 23 and become certified in OC spray and asp baton. Candidates will also receive training on tactical handcuffing.
Interested applicants can pick-up an application from the Sheriff’s Office located at 223 North Live Oak Drive in Moncks Corner during business hours.
Prior to enrolling in the class, candidates must take and pass the Nelson Denny–a timed test that includes vocabulary and reading comprehension. The candidate screening process will also include a polygraph examination, background and credit check.

For those who successfully graduate from the class, the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy mandates that reserve deputies put in a minimum of 60 hours per quarter. They must also attend monthly meetings and training sessions at the sheriff’s office.
