MONCKS CORNER, SC – Berkeley County Emergency Preparedness Department, in conjunction with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division and the National Guard, will be participating in a statewide Vigilant Guard exercise in March to simulate a hurricane landing in our state.
The training exercise will prepare State National Guards to respond to crisis with multiple agencies, validate crisis action plans, and demonstrate the functionality of the Shared / Situational Awareness COP tool. The full training exercise will take place March 1st through March 13th, with Berkeley County’s participation happening March 7th – March 10th.
On Saturday, March 7th at 10:00 AM, training of over 100 door-to-door wellness checks will be performed in the Overton Community of Berkeley County. Guards will practice these wellness checks under the guise that citizens have refused to evacuate during a hurricane, the hurricane has made landfall, and the status of the civilians is unknown.
“These training exercises are extremely important not only for the Guard but also for our local counties,” said Lori Kidwell of the Berkeley County Emergency Preparedness Department. “We all are working to ensure our residents remain safe even during the most difficult times. To this end, we want to make the Overton Community aware of the training, so they are not surprised when the Guard shows up at their doors. We also ask the Overton Community to participate in the activity.”
