BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—According to Adam Hammons, director for Berkeley County Elections and Voter Registration, as of 3 p.m. Friday a total of eight people have filed for sheriff of Berkeley County.
Hammons says he expects more to also file.
“We have heard as many as 15, not sure if that many will follow through and file,” stated Hammons. “I would expect to have at least 10 and probably more.”
While he admits to have so many candidates file for one elected position is rare, Hammons says it’s certainly not unheard of.
“In 2013 when Congressional 1 was open after Tim Scott became a Senator, there were 16 Republican that ran for that seat,” he stated.
So far the following candidates have officially tossed their hats into the ring:
- Brian Adams
- Marty Housand
- Ricky Driggers
- Duane Lewis
- Chad Caldwell
- Will Rogers
- Jerry Merrithew
- Calvitt Chab Clarke
Current BCSO Chief Duputy Rick Ollic announced earlier this week his plans to run; however, at this time he has not yet filed. To keep updated with the list of candidates who file, visit this link here. The site will update as new candidates come in.
Filing will close on noon Monday, March 2nd with the Republican primary scheduled for April 21st. The special election is set for June 9th.
The special election comes after longtime sheriff Wayne DeWitt resigned from office earlier this month after his arrest for driving under the influence, failure to stop for blue lights and leaving the scene of an accident. He was indicted on those charges on February 10th.
