BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The SC 4-H Youth Development Programs have a new short term project for youth who are interested in gardening. The Small Garden Project will allow youth ages 5 – 19 to learn how to prepare, plant, maintain and harvest a small garden.
A contest record book will also be submitted for judging. Seeds will be provided for one vegetable. Youth will choose at least 2 other vegetable crops to grow. An area of at least 100 square feet will be needed for the garden. Raised beds can be used if desired.
The registration fee of $10 for current 4-H members and $20 for non-members covers the cost of a soil sample, record book, score criterion and seed packet. Registrations will be accepted until April 1. Soil samples will need to be submitted to the local County Extension office by May 1 in order to meet the May 31 planting deadline. The contest record book will be due on August 7.
Youth will be divided into three categories prior to judging: cloverbuds
(5-8 years of age ), juniors ( 9-13 years of age ), and seniors ( 14-19 years of age ). Participants will be judged and awarded according to guidelines at local, regional and state levels.
