BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On Monday night, council unanimously voted to suspend the Sunday work ordinance or “Blue Laws” in Berkeley County.
Blue laws, known also as Sunday laws, date back as far as the mid-1700s. They are laws designed to restrict or ban some or all Sunday activities for religious reasons.
In Berkeley County, the work ordinance prohibited individuals from working before 1:30 p.m. on Sundays, with certain exceptions and exceptions.
It also restricted certain retailers from operating their business before 1:30 p.m. on Sundays.
Council leaders decided to give the outdated law the boot after it came to their attention that many commercial entities were already operating before 1:30 p.m. on Sundays without any repercussion.
They also stated that they realized that the suspension of Sunday work prohibitions were necessary for the operation of certain businesses and that it “will promote a healthy and competitive local economy and encourage the creation of new jobs.”
