MONCKS CORNER, SC – Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler recently announced that Giff Daughtridge, Vice President of Nucor Steel Berkeley, has been recognized as an Ambassador for Economic Development by Governor Nikki Haley.
Peagler nominated Daughtridge for the award because Daughtridge’s efforts have not only helped Nucor grow immensely but have also led to tremendous economic growth for Berkeley County and the entire State of South Carolina.
“Mr. Daughtridge has been a true leader in Berkeley County,” said Peagler. “From managing 930 employees in Nucor’s Berkeley County plant to supporting an additional 500 contractors daily to mentoring a number of existing businesses on safety practices to mentoring elementary, middle, technical school and university students – Mr. Daughtridge is truly an ambassador for economic development and a role model for so many. It was my honor to nominate him for this award.”
“It is very nice to receive this award from Governor Haley who is such a strong advocate for manufacturing and manufacturing jobs,” said Daughtridge. “Nucor Steel Berkeley is very proud to call South Carolina home, and it is through the whole team’s hard work that we have been able to achieve our level of success. It is also a pleasure and an honor to work with the Berkeley County team who are all dedicated to economic development and raising the quality of life for our communities by bringing good jobs to South Carolina.”
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance and the President of the Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce, Daughtridge secured $132 in new investment for the Nucor Berkeley County plant in 2014. Competing corporate wide for capital dollars in 2013, Daughtridge successfully made the case that this large investment in Berkeley County and in the State of South Carolina was important not only to the company’s growth, but also the region’s economic growth.
In notifying Daughtridge of the award by letter, South Carolina Department of Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt said, “The Ambassador Award is a special recognition for the exceptional contributions you have made to your community and to South Carolina’s economic development efforts.”
Daughtridge received the award from Governor Haley at the Governor’s Mansion on Thursday.
