MONCKS CORNER, SC – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Highway Enforcement Aggressive Team (H.E.A.T) and a number of Berkeley County Sheriff Deputies received statewide awards last week.
During the 10th Annual South Carolina Department of Public Safety’s DUI Enforcement Recognition Ceremonies, Berkeley County H. E. A. T. was recognized for its dedicated efforts in enforcing the state’s DUI laws and also received a digital in-car video system.
Individual awards were also presented at the Recognition Ceremonies including the South Carolina Law Enforcement DUI Hero Award based on the amount of DUI arrests for the year.
Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Lonnie Mizzell was presented with the Gold Hero Award for 50 or more DUI arrests. Corporal John Dawson and Corporal Nick Johnson received the Silver Hero Award for each making 25 to 49 DUI arrests.
Since the implementation of the DUI Enforcement Program, Berkeley County has seen a significant decrease in the number of fatal vehicle accidents and in the number of fatal accidents associated with impaired drivers.
Berkeley County Sheriff C. W. “Butch” Henerey joined the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Command Staff in commending the deputies for their arrest records.
“These awards highlight the dedication and service the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Deputies provide to the citizens of Berkeley County,” said Henerey.
