BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to Berkeley County Elections & Registration Assistant Director Rose M. Brown, the votes have been recounted and the results are listed below:
- Duane Lewis: 1935
- Rick Ollic: 1826
For much of Tuesday night, Berkeley County Chief Deputy Rick Ollic and Lewis were neck-and-neck.
In the end, Ollic finished with 12.31% of the votes, Lewis with 13.05%.
Because there was less than a one percent difference between the two, a mandatory recount was held this morning. The recount still showed Lewis coming in second place.
Lewis, the deputy chief of law enforcement at Santee Cooper, will face Brian Adams, a North Charleston police officer, in a runoff on May 5th.
Out of all the 14 candidates on the ballot, Adams received 23.75% of the votes–more than any other candidate.
The Republican candidate who wins the runoff in May will then head to the general election on June 9th, facing off against Democratic candidate Anthony Smalls.
The search for a new sheriff in Berkeley County comes after longtime sheriff Wayne DeWitt resigned after being charged with DUI and hit-and-run.
