BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Dozens of people in Berkeley County said a big “thank you” to a man who spent much of his life serving his country.
Sergeant First Class David Gethers, 91, was honored Friday during the Vietnam War Survivor’s and Remembrance Commemoration on W. Main Street in Moncks Corner.
Gethers served in three wars–World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
He told ABC News 4’s Ava Wilhite that he stayed in the military for so long long because of the people who served with him and his love for his country.
“I really was thrilled, you know, he deserved it, three wars you know, and he doesn’t have a broken bone. He has both arms, both legs, you know, he can do for himself,” said his wife Evelyn Gethers.
As a young soldier, Gethers began his career in support roles during World War II. By the time his country called him to serve in Vietnam, he was a helicopter mechanic.
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution partnered with the Department of Defense to make Friday’s event possible which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.
