HANAHAN, S.C.–Nearly a dozen people are homeless after a fire badly damaged a two-story apartment building on Willard Street early Saturday morning.
Both the Hanahan and North Charleston Fire Departments responded to the scene shortly after midnight.
Disaster-trained American Red Cross volunteers assisted ten people living inside the apartment whose six separate apartments were destroyed by fire.
Since Thursday, Red Cross volunteers have assisted 46 fire victims in the Charleston area.
The Red Cross provided financial assistance for food, clothing, and temporary lodging, as well as comfort kits, containing personal hygiene items, and referrals to partner agencies to help with the families’ long-term recovery.
Last year, the Palmetto South Carolina Region assisted over 7,000 individuals affected by disaster. Since January 1, 2015, in the Lowcountry alone, the Red Cross has assisted over 400 fire victims.
