BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Berkeley County residents have flooded to social media to report seeing heavy smoke and ash in places like Cordesville, Macedonia, Moncks Corner and Goose Creek.
For some homeowners, the sight of the thick smoke and ash looked like a volcano getting ready to erupt. Luckily, that’s definitely not the case.
Instead, it’s all part of a controlled burn throughout the Francis Marion National Forest.
According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, these prescribed burns are necessary from time to time.
They help restore and maintain vital habitat for wildlife, including bobwhite quail and other grassland birds, wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, gopher tortoises, and red-cockaded woodpeckers.
Besides the many wildlife species that require fire-dependent habitat, many plants thrive only in regularly burned forests.
