MONCKS CORNER, SC – Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler announced that an agreement has been reached with GenEarth that will shut down the company’s operation in Berkeley County and give ownership of its facilities to the county.
County Council approved the agreement at last night’s council meeting.
The agreement calls for the removal of the remaining sludge from the site. The agreement also ensures no more sludge from the facility will be spread on agricultural fields across the county.
Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler is very pleased that an agreement has been reached.
“Resolving the GenEarth matter has been one of my highest priorities since taking office,” said Peagler. “I am proud that, in roughly five months, we were able to put a stop to a years-long problem.”
While the County works to finalize plans for the current facilities and site, Supervisor Peagler stressed that the days of importing sludge from other counties are over.
“With this agreement in place, our engineers can now establish the best use of the facilities – keeping the health, well-being and quality of life of Berkeley County residents at the forefront of their decision making.”
Berkeley County Councilman Tommy Newell also added the following comment:
“This Council and Administration listened to the concerns of the tax payers directly effected by GenEarth. The existing funds to buy them out are coming from Water and Sanitation not new monies from the tax payers,” stated Newell. “We gain assets to sell and use to reimburse Water and Sanitation. If we didn’t take this proactive approach it would have cost more in the long run.”
