BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Sangaree Intermediate School’s chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) will present a check for $1,500 to the Berkeley County Sherriff’s Office on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Sangaree Intermediate School, 201 School House Lane, Summerville.
Students in Sangaree Intermediate’s NEHS meet at the beginning of each year to choose their main service project and set goals for the year. This year, the project was to raise money for the Berkeley County Sherriff’s Office’s K-9 Unit with the intention of purchasing GPS units for each K-9.
“It is a great feeling to watch these young people give with such kind hearts, while showing true leadership as they organize and work as a team to make so much happen in a school year,” said Michelle Harrelson, one of Sangaree Intermediate’s NEHS advisors.
Students participated in several fundraising events to raise as much money as possible for the K-9 Unit. On November 15, 2014, students hosted a car wash and raised $277. On February 19, 2015, they hosted a Valentine’s Dance and raised $992.25. Finally, on March 17, 2015, the students had a pickle sale and raised $164.15. The school’s PTA gave the last $66.60 for the students to give an even $1,500.
Sangaree Intermediate’s NEHS was formed in 2009 with 14 students and was the first Berkeley County School to offer the program. To become an NEHS member, students must meet specific academic and role model expectations and receive an invitation.
Sangaree Intermediate averages approximately 40 members yearly. Over the years, the group has completed countless service projects including planting flowers at the school; singing carols at a nursing home during the holidays; raising money to send with a teacher to provide outreach to Alabama tornado victims; giving money to the Red Cross in to assist victims of the earthquake in Haiti; providing donations to ONE80 Place; packing boxes for soldiers; visiting the SPCA; and conducting beach sweeps.
