MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Over 200 people attended the Vietnam War Survivors and Remembrance Service on May 1, 2015 at Noon at the Berkeley County Veterans Monument in Moncks Corner, SC.
The ceremony was conducted by General Marion’s Brigade Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in partnership with the Dept. of Defense’s 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Vietnam War.
The service honored the memory of the 19 Berkeley County men who died in Vietnam. Several family members of those men attended and received a certificate honoring their loved one.
All Vietnam Veterans who attended were thanked for their service on behalf of a grateful nation. They received items of appreciation from the Dept. of Defense, the DAR and local Moncks Corner merchants who provided gift certificates.
One Berkeley County man was especially honored as a Veteran of three wars: WW II, Korea and Vietnam. Brigadier General (Retired) Henry Taylor presented SFC David A. Gethers, age 91, a framed certificate from the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Vietnam Veteran Nathan Daniel, of Pineville, SC, presented a wreath on behalf of the DAR. He was presented a DAR Vietnam Certificate by Chapter Regent Henrietta Acton. VFW State Chaplain Davey Hare of Post 9509 spoke on the “Importance of Remembrance”.
Following his words Chaplain Hare, a Vietnam Veteran, was also presented a DAR Vietnam War Certificate. DAR members Annegell McCants and Carolyn Meistrell read aloud the names of those who died and a bell was rung by Pam Herndon after each name.
Berkeley High School AFROTC Cadets served as Color Guard and a detachment saluted during the reading of the names. Destiny Sumter sang the National Anthem.
American Legion Post 166 provided the Honor Guard Gun Salute and William Philips played “Taps.” Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler and several Berkeley County Mayors attended the service.
A class of 3rd and 4th grade students from St. John’s Christian Academy attended and waved American Flags they received from General Marion’s Brigade.
The Lowcountry Patriot Guard Riders surrounded the monument holding American Flags and Flags of the 5 Branches of the United State Military. Parris Island Living History displayed items actually used in Vietnam, including weapons, communication tools, and personal supplies.
The entire service was covered by TV Channel 2 WCBD and Channel 4 WCIV.
