BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is testing four body cameras on several of its deputies.
Currently, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s office is testing a Taser-brand body cam called Axon Flex for the next 30-40 days. After that deputies will begin testing another manufacturer’s body cam.
Officials at the sheriff’s office say the goal is to keep training with the body cameras as issues on legalities, cost, and privacy are sorted out at the state level.
Just yesterday South Carolina lawmakers unanimously passed a measure that will require all state and local law enforcement officers to be equipped with body cameras.
As part of its vote, the House of Representatives agreed to name the bill for Walter Scott, a man who was shot and killed as he ran away from a North Charleston police officer after a traffic stop last month.
The officer, Michael Slager, has since been fired from the force and charged with murder in Scott’s death. Video from a bystander’s cell phone showed Slager, 33, shooting Scott, 50, eight times at his back.
