BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has released a sketch drawing of a person wanted for questioning in the shooting of Berkeley County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Will Rogers on Thursday night.
The individual was described to be a black male in his 20’s, 5-feet-10 to 5-feet-11 inches tall, weighing 150 to 170 pounds. The person’s hair has a reddish tint toward the forehead.
Anyone who knows or recognizes the individual depicted in this illustration should contact the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office at 843-719-4424, the S.C. Law Enforcement Division at 843-782-3822 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME SC.
Lieutenant Rogers remains hospitalized at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in critical but stable condition.
County leaders say Rogers’ condition appears to be improving. They say he has been taken off of a ventilator and is beginning to talk and recognize family members.
According to a police report released today, Rogers was shot in the back of the head at the Exxon gas station located
along Highway 52 and Cypress Gardens Road on Thursday night.
A Moncks Corner police officer says after the shooting, he also noticed a bullet hole on the driver’s side of the Tahoe belonging to Rogers.
“I knelt down beside Lieutenant Rogers and asked what happened. He said he didn’t know,” stated the officer in the report. “Rogers was trying to sit up and was complaining that his head was hurting.”
A witness told officers prior to Rogers being shot he saw a man walk in front of Rogers’ Tahoe and fired three rounds from a silver revolver.
“He stated that the man then walked over to a blue SUV and pointed the gun at the driver,” stated the officer in the report.
The witness reportedly told police that he ran away because he was worried that the individual was randomly shooting people.
Police eventually located the driver of the SUV.
According to the incident report, the driver stated that the man pointed a gun at him and ordered him out of his SUV. He complied.
After shooting Rogers, the suspect then took off in the vehicle.
Multiple agencies then began a manhunt for the suspect.
The Charleston Police Department, North Charleston Police Department, Summerville Police Department, Goose Creek Police Department, Bonneau Police Department, Hanahan Police Department and Charleston County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search.
The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned at a boat landing not far from the crime scene.
