CHARLESTON, S.C.–Members of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and the family of Lt. Will Rogers gathered outside MUSC in downtown Charleston Tuesday. There, they made an emotional plea to the public, asking for help solving the shooting of the veteran deputy.
On Thursday, Rogers was shot in the back of the head while standing outside the Exxon gas station located on Highway 52 and Cypress Gardens Road in Moncks Corner. His shooter took off in a stolen SUV which was later found abandoned at a nearby boat landing.
Wearing shirts that read “Police Lives Matter,” Jamie Rogers Wyatt thanked the community for their support but also begged them to help find her father’s shooter.
“We strongly need public’s help. The shooter ambushed our father and shot him in the back of the head. He left our father there to die,” Wyatt stated while surrounded by her three brothers. “We’re asking again
for the shooter to do the right thing and turn himself in. We are asking anyone with information about the shooter to come forward.”
Two days after the shooting, SLED released a sketch drawing of a person of interest.
The individual was described to be a black male in his 20’s, 5-feet-10 to 5-feet-11 inches tall, weighing 150 to 170 pounds. The person’s hair has a reddish tint toward the forehead.
Lieutenant Rogers remains hospitalized at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in critical but stable condition. County officials say that although he has been taking off of a ventilator and is starting to talk and recognize family–he still has a long road ahead to recovery.
“When the shooter shot Lt. Rogers, he just didn’t shoot a law enforcement officer. He shot a father and
grandfather. He shot a Marine vet. He shot a true public servant,” stated Rogers’ daughter.
Interim Sheriff Butch Henerey spoke after Rogers’ daughter, stating that an $11,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to an arrest of the person responsible for the shooting.
“I can’t imagine how difficult this is for her (Wyat),” stated Henerey. “We would like to announce Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has funded a $5,000 reward for info leading to an arrest and conviction. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has added an additional $5,000 and Crimestoppers has added $1,000.”
Henerey stated some people have expressed interest in donating to the reward money. He stated they can do that simply by calling Crimestoppers.
