CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C.–The Charleston County Coroner has identified the swimmer who drowned on Sullivan’s Island on Memorial Day.
He’s been identified as 23-year-old Santos Castillo of Hanahan.
According to chief deputy coroner Bobbie Jo O’Neal, Castillo died at 4:49 P.M. on Monday at East Cooper Medical Center after being pulled out of the waters off of Station 22 on Sullivan’s Island.
Emergency responders attempted to perform CPR on Castillo but to no avail.
“They pulled him from the water. He was blue…unresponsive. They worked on him for about 10 minutes and they didn’t seem to get anything,” Lindsay Page told WCBD-TV. “Everyone was just standing around praying and just hoping that he would breathe life again. So yeah…devastating.”
Witnesses say the victim’s family was at the beach when Castillo was found unresponsive.
“That was the hardest thing to see was the family,” stated Keith Hogan.
The Coroner’s Office has reported Castillo’s official cause of death as drowning.
