School Leaders & Community Celebrate The Completion Of Nexton Elementary

SUMMERVILLE, S.C.–On Monday, Berkeley County school leaders and members of the community officially celebrated the completion of Nexton Elementary School with a special ribbon ceremony.

The school, which is located at 200 Scholar Way, is slated to open its doors this August.

It will cater to approximately 900 students in the Summerville area.

The $20 million school is the first of five new schools being built in the county as part of the district’s $198 million building and renovation program.

On December 16th, 2013 construction began on the new 105,500 square foot facility for the Berkeley County School District and the upcoming Nexton Community which is expected to bring 75,000 people to the area.

One to 1 programs provide students with portable computers and/or devices to enhance opportunities for learning.

Learning Devices/Technology:

  • Kindergarten through 1st grade students will use 1-to-1 iPads
  • 2nd through 5th grade students will use Chromebooks
  • SMART Boards in every classroom

The new state-of-the-art facilities:

  • Were designed for 900 students
  • Measure 105,500 square feet
  • Is the second prototypical design built within the school district
  • Have been completed ON time and ON budget
  • Will open for students on the first day of school on Monday, August 17, 2015

Unique features include:

  • A design that incorporates natural lighting throughout the building (thereby limiting utility costs)
  • A two-pipe water heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system
  • Plumbing, electrical and heating equipment separated from other areas, allowing for maintenance to occur during the school day with minimal interruptions to classroom instruction
  • Wireless internet connection available throughout the building
  • A 21st Century learning environment that includes:
    • 41 regular classrooms organized so that each grade level has its own wing
    • Two music rooms
    • Two art rooms
    • A full media center
    • Two stationary computer resource labs
    • Private areas for support services (including guidance)
    • A large cafeteria and multi-purpose room with a stage
    • Restrooms throughout the facilities with a total of 70 toilets
    • A courtyard that can used as an outside classroom
