MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–According to Berkeley County Elections Director Adam Hammons, only one vote separates businessmen Jay Law and Chad Sweatman.
Both men are seeking Michael Lockliear’s vacated seat. The former councilman became the town’s mayor in May.
“The election came within one percent so there will be an automatic recount following certification. Moncks Corner’s will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday,” stated Hammons.
Hammons stated that 503 people voted in the runoff for Moncks Corner Town Council on Tuesday. Law received 252 (50.10%) votes while Sweatman received 251 votes (49.90%).
The Berkeley County School Board race for District 7 was held Tuesday night as well. According to Hammons–1,116 people voted in that race.
The results are as follows:
Eight votes decided the four-person race, giving it to former Berkeley County Councilman Julius Barnes of St. Stephen.
Hammons says because the school board race also fell within the one percent margin, there will be an automatic recount which will take place on Friday at 10 a.m.
