BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Cainhoy Fire Department has been awarded 200 smoke detectors as part of the “$5 For Life” campaign.
Earlier this year, Service Master of Charleston teamed up with the South Carolina Stingrays and True Value Hardware to launch the “$5 For Life” campaign.
The goal of the campaign was to raise money to purchase smoke detectors, which cost around $5 each, and get a working smoke detector into every home in the lowcountry.
Over the past few months, fundraising has been a great success, and Service Master of Charleston was able to purchase more than 2,000 smoke detectors to kick off the program.
The detectors were presented recently to multiple local fire departments during a ceremony in North Charleston, and Cainhoy Fire Department received 200 detectors. The Cainhoy Fire Department will kick off their new Smoke Detector Program with a Smoke Detector Blitz on Saturday August 22.
The Cainhoy Fire Department will team up with the Hearts of Huger Community Group to install free smoke detectors into homes in the Cainhoy, Huger, and Wando communities.
“Smoke detectors save lives. When a fire occurs in your home, smoke spreads fast, and a working smoke detector can alert you early and give you time to get out. During 2007-2011, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths in the United Stated resulted from fires in homes with either no smoke detectors or no working smoke detectors,” says Cainhoy Fire Department Deputy Chief Steve Goodwin. “The Cainhoy Fire Department takes a proactive approach to fire prevention and community education, and we are very excited to kick off our smoke detector program and improve fire safety for the residents of our community.”
Any residents that would like a free smoke detector installed in their home may sign up by contacting Deputy Chief Steve Goodwin at [email protected], sending a message via Facebook at www.facebook.com/cainhoyfire, or in person at Cainhoy Station 3 located at 2451 Clements Ferry Road, Monday-Friday 8am-4pm.
You may also contact Bernard Watson with the Hearts of Huger at 843-754-7966. Additionally, once the 200 smoke detectors have been installed, Cainhoy Fire Department and the Hearts of Huger will provide any additional detectors needed to ensure that nobody is turned away.
