GOOSE CREEK, S.C.—On Saturday, shortly before 3 p.m., a Goose Creek officer responded to the Boulder Bluff subdivision in reference to a reckless driver.
According to the incident report, a witness followed the vehicle, described as a white Infiniti driven by 26-year-old James Cale Gilliam, throughout the Boulder Bluff subdivision.
The witness reportedly notified dispatch that at one point Gilliam fired a gun at his vehicle.
Eventually, police say Gilliam and the witness stopped near Boulder Bluff Elementary School and began to argue. Dispatch reportedly ordered the witness to walk away from Gilliam, however claimed he “refused to heed the orders to back off.”
As police arrived on the scene, Gilliam reportedly sped off in his vehicle with officers chasing after him. During the chase, Gilliam struck one of the officer’s patrol cars, the report says.
“The Infiniti drove half way off the left shoulder almost losing control. As I made the right turn, I observed Gilliam over-correct and veer right towards my front bumper. I broke hard and attempted to avoid contact but the Infiniti veered right and struck my front push bumper,” read the report.
According to officers, after crashing into another vehicle on Liberty Hall and Lindy Creek, Gilliam exited the vehicle, running towards the tree line in the direction of the North Greenview subdivision. Officers stated that he then asked someone for a ride to Wendy’s restaurant on Redbank Road.
“The citizen on Wells Road, wish to remain anonymous, but stated that he gave Gilliam a ride to Wendy’s restaurant but realized that something was wrong when he saw all the police cars in the area. After dropping off Gilliam, the citizen reported to police Gilliam’s location,” the police report continued.
Berkeley County deputies assisted Goose Creek Police with tracking Gilliam down.
It was deputies who eventually located Gilliam at 102 Redbank Road at the Quality Inn pool where he was taken into custody.
He’s been charged with failure to stop for blue lights and driving with a suspended license.
“The city police vehicle struck by the suspect vehicle suffered only minor damage and the officer was not injured,” stated Captain John Grainger. “That collision was investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Gilliam was booked into the Berkeley County Detention Center.
