MONCKS CORNER, S.C.—After a runoff that recently ended in a tie, the third time appears to be the charm.
On Tuesday night, local businessman Chad Sweatman was declared the unofficial winner of the Moncks Corner special election for town council.
Sweatman received 51.59 percent of the vote while his opponent, Jay Law, received 48.41 percent of the vote.
“We had a good turnout today, just over 13%, more than the first election and more than the first runoff, stated Adam Hammons, Berkeley County’s election director.
The votes will be certified this Thursday at 10 a.m. at the county’s elections office, Hammons added.
“There are three provisional ballots that the board will look at, but regardless they will not change the outcome of a difference of 22 votes,” stated Hammons.
According to Hammons, 690 people voted in the special election for town council—190 more than the July 16th runoff.
The field of seven candidates was originally narrowed to Sweatman and Law after a June 30th election.
The position was left vacant when Michael Lockliear was elected mayor in February.
