BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Chief Deputy Mike Cochran of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has released details of a car chase from last night that ended with the driver, who is also the the suspect, in the hospital.
According to Berkeley County Spokesperson Michael Mule, Berkeley County deputies responded last night to a disturbance call on Sassafras Lane in Summerville.
While on the way to the call, deputies were flagged down on Tillman Branch Road, also in Summerville, by the complainant, Mule stated.
The complainant reportedly told deputies that his adult daughter was involved in a domestic dispute with the subject who has had “a tumultuous relationship with the daughter,” Mule stated. The complainant called his daughter on the phone, allowing deputies to hear a loud disturbance on the phone.
Mule stated that deputies obtained the vehicle description – a burgundy-colored, Nissan truck – and began to look for the vehicle. While this was happening, officials say the suspect stated that he would “kill” both the victim and himself. This dialogue continued for some time, as the deputies attempted to quell the situation in order to save the victim from further harm.
After circulating, deputies located the truck containing the suspect and the victim near Cypress Gardens Road and Old Highway 52. A traffic stop was conducted, whereupon the suspect stopped and attempted to push the victim out of the vehicle as it was still moving – causing her to be dragged momentarily. The victim then got back in the vehicle, and the driver sped off.
Deputies began to chase the driver, causing him to stop again. This time he was successful in pushing the victim out of the vehicle. After doing so, he sped off along Old Highway 52 toward Moncks Corner. The suspect started to drive in a reckless manner in an attempt to crash.
After making several erratic moves, the suspect then steered the truck directly into the concrete bridge just before Berkeley Country Club. The truck then caught fire and the suspect was able to crawl out of the wreck. He was subsequently transported to the MUSC in an unknown condition.
“The swift, coordinated and decisive work carried out by the deputies in this case was exceptional,” said Chief Deputy Cochran. “This was great police work by any measure. Thankfully, no citizens or deputies were injured in this incident.”
Detectives are seeking warrants on this case for the related crimes – namely: Domestic 1st, Kidnapping and Failure to Stop for Blue Light.
Mule stated that when warrants are obtained, the name of the suspect will be released.
