GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–A ribbon cutting ceremony will officially mark the opening of the Goose Creek High School and Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union’s (HTFCU) first student-run credit union high school branch in the tri-county area. The ceremony will be Tuesday, August, 25, 2015, at Goose Creek High (1137 Redbank Road, Goose Creek) beginning at 6:30 p.m.
“We are very excited to open the first student-run credit union high school branch in the tri-county area right here at Goose Creek High. The students and faculty are very excited about working with the student-run credit union. It will be extremely convenient for both students and teachers to bank with HTFCU,” said Goose Creek High School Principal, Jimmy Huskey.
“Heritage Trust is excited to be pioneering this initiative in the Lowcountry. As a member-owned not-for-profit financial cooperative, we believe in the importance of financial education and advocacy,” commented Jim McDaniel, Heritage Trust President & CEO. “The new student-run branches will help students understand the importance of saving and provide the opportunity, tools and skill sets to be financially successful.”
Last March, Berkeley County School District and HTFCU signed a partnership contract. It was the formal unveiling of the new Heritage Trust Business and Information Systems Academy at Goose Creek High School. Heritage Trust is Berkeley County School District’s second Platinum Level Sponsor. The company will donate more than $460,000 during the next five years in time, talent and support.
Describing her excitement about the opportunity, Michelle Sharp, business instructor at Goose Creek High and teacher liaison for the Goose Creek High student-run credit union, said, “There are no words to truly express how excited I am about our new in-school credit union. These students have been through some very rigorous training to prepare them to work here. I applaud Heritage Trust, Berkeley County School District and Goose Creek High School for taking on this project; this is such a great opportunity for everyone involved. I have a great group of kids that are ecstatic to be a part of this, and we can’t wait to see what this year has in store for us.”
Heritage Trust is investing in the local area’s future business leaders through hands-on collaboration with teachers and students. The company will provide student internships as well as software programs similar to those used by banking and finance institutions.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in advertising for HTFCU by overseeing the creation of brochures, fliers, magazine publications, newspaper advertisements, radio and television commercials and graphic design advertisements.
HTFCU also will assist and participate in the development and evaluation of senior student projects and capstone experiences. All of this to bring real-world relevance to academic learning and ensure that academy students have the skills and education needed to meet the demands of today’s job market.
“We are very excited to have the privilege of opening the first student-run Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union in the state. Heritage Trust has provided an innovative educational experience that our students have eagerly embraced,” said Heather Ducker, academy coach at Goose Creek High.
The Academies of Berkeley County allow students to learn in a context that suits their career interests. High school students may select academies focused on Arts and Humanities; Business and Information Systems; Health Sciences, Human and Public Services and Engineering, Manufacturing and Industrial Technologies. Berkeley County School District and both the Berkeley County and Charleston Metro Chambers of Commerce are actively seeking business sponsors and partners for all academies.
