BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Cainhoy Fire Department kicked off its new ‘Smoke Detector Program’ on Saturday, August 22th with great success, Deputy Chief Steve Goodwin stated.
Members of Cainhoy Fire Department were joined by volunteers from the Hearts of Huger Community Group, the American Red Cross, and Nucor Steel to take part in a smoke detector blitz, reaching approximately 70 homes in the Cainhoy, Wando, and Huger Communities.
While at the homes, volunteers installed new smoke detectors and also took time to talk to residents about fire safety and the importance of having working smoke detectors and escape plans in case of a fire.
Last month, Cainhoy Fire Department was awarded 200 detectors from Service Master of Charleston as part of their “$5 for Life” campaign, which aims to get a working smoke detector into every home in the Low Country.
“We are very excited to have kicked off this program and improve fire safety for the residents of our community. And to ensure that nobody is turned away, Cainhoy Fire Department and the Hearts of Huger will provide any additional detectors needed once the first 200 have been installed,” stated Goodwin.
Any resident who would like a free smoke detector installed in their home may sign up by contacting Goodwin at [email protected] or sending a message via facebook.com/cainhoyfire.
You can also stop in at Station 3 located at 2451 Clements Ferry Road, Monday-Friday 8am-4pm to schedule an instillation.
“We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped in getting this program started,” stated Goodwin.
