BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—During Monday night’s Berkeley County council meeting, Lt. Will Rogers was sworn in under Duane Lewis.
When a new sheriff takes takes office, each deputy in the department must take the oath from him or her.
Lewis officially took office on June 12th, replacing longtime sheriff Wayne DeWitt who resigned earlier this year.
During the event, dozens of people packed the inside of council chambers—including many deputies.
“It’s a miracle Will Rogers survived,” Lewis stated before administering the oath of office to Rogers. “This is a testament to his courage and commitment to Berkeley County.”
Although he uses a wheelchair to primarily get around, for a brief moment Rogers stood as Lewis
administered the oath of office. Afterward, the sheriff congratulated Rogers.
The veteran deputy also received a standing ovation from the audience. Many of Rogers’ friends and family were in attendance—including his mother who sported a green t-shirt that read, “Where there’s a WILL, there’s a WAY.”
While it’s unclear when Rogers might return to work, Lewis stated that Rogers is very eager to come back to the job.
“Will will always have a place at this sheriff’s office,” Lewis stated.
Rogers was shot in the head on May 14th at the Exxon gas station located at the intersection of Highway 52 and Cypress Gardens Road. Police eventually killed his shooter, Jerome Thomas Caldwell, 32, after they say he opened fire on them.
Since the incident, Rogers’ recovery has been nothing short of a miracle.
