MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–The Town of Moncks Corner is officially looking for a new police chief. Town officials made the job opening public on Tuesday.
Moncks Corner Police Chief Chad Caldwell says he will retire after spending 40 years in law enforcement. His last day on the job will be December 31st.
He told WCBD-TV that changes in his benefits mandated by the Obamacare law would force him to give up his current benefits plan. Rather than change his current state plan, Chief Caldwell said it was best to just step down.
Caldwell has served as the town’s chief for the last 15 years. Prior to that, he worked more than a decade as the chief for the North Charleston Police Department as well as several years with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
Earlier this year, Caldwell ran for Berkeley County Sheriff; however, he lost the GOP primary to Duane Lewis.
With an operating budget of $1.8 million, the town’s new police chief will manage 29 full-time sworn officers and three civilian employees who serve its more than 9,000 resident population.
Town officials are accepting applications for police chief through November 13th. The starting salary is listed around $61,000 for the position.
