Former Berkeley Co. Detention Center Nurse Accused of Stealing Meds from Inmates

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to the Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s Office, a former nurse who worked at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center under contract from Southern Health Partners, a third-party vendor has been arrested.

She’s been identified as 30-year-old Jewel Denice Baker of North Charleston.

Investigators with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office say they learned that Baker was involved with the theft of various prescription medications which were prescribed to several inmates at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, where she had been assigned since September 2015.

The investigation revealed numerous prescription medications that originated at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center at her residence in the Dorchester County section of North Charleston.

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.

Baker was charged with four counts of Theft of a Controlled Substance, First Offense.

Sheriff Lewis stated, “When this situation was discovered, we acted swiftly to investigate it thoroughly and make the appropriate charges.”

Baker reportedly surrendered to sheriff’s deputies. Theft of a Controlled Substance, First Offense, is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a fine of $5,000.

She was given a bond hearing Thursday and granted a $25,000 personal recognizance bond on each charge.
