Today, we start with Rodney Varner. To learn more about him, visit his official campaign page on Facebook.

1. Why are you running for town council?

I have decided to run because the town of Moncks Corner is a great place to live. There is so much potential here. Having traveled the world afar in the military, I always looked forward to coming home to my family who resides in Moncks Corner. Now that I am retired, I want to serve and give this great community the same dedication and service that I have given to our country.

2. Why do you think you’re the best candidate for the job?

I am an Army veteran of over 22 years and I would bring a wealth of experience to council. My military experience and leadership abilities combined make me a great asset to the Moncks Corner community.

3. For anyone unfamiliar with who you are, can you talk a little more about your background?

Serving in the U.S. Armed Forces for over 22 years has opened my eyes to changes that need to be made in our country. I realized that in order for change to take place it first starts here at home. The reason I am running for Moncks Corner Town Council is because I understand the importance of unity and teamwork. I also understand what is required to have an effective community.

In order to have an effective community, you must continuously find solutions to meet the needs of the people. The town of Moncks Corner is developing daily and with strategic planning our beautiful town can accommodate the expansion of businesses, homes, and any future modifications. I seek to join forces alongside the great leaders that are currently serving on town council, and I look forward to the continued development of our town that will impact the future.

4. What is your educational background?
A.A. Degree in General Studies from University of Phoenix
B.S. Degree in Religion from Liberty University
M.T.S. Degree in Theological Studies from Liberty University Baptist Theological Seminary
Diploma from the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School

5. What issues in Moncks Corner are important to you and why?

Growth: Ensuring that we provide the services to match the growth. New Businesses: To help provide additional jobs to our community and to help build the local economy. Recreation: To provide outlets for our youth up to age 17.

6. Are there any problems in Moncks Corner that you feel need to be addressed? If so, what?

I would like to see more outlets for our youth up to age 17. If elected, I intend to work closely with my colleagues so that we can provide adequate recreation for our youth here in our town.

7. How would you describe your character?

  • Selfless Service. I believe in working together as a team. The military has trained me very well. I also understand that it is very important to meet the needs of the people in a timely manner. A happy community makes an effective community.
  • Compassionate. I also have a heart for people. Over the 22 years that I served in the U.S. ARMY, I understood that I chose a career that really had nothing to do with me. I decided a long time ago to commit myself to the service of the U.S. ARMY to protect and defend the rights and privileges of my fellow Americans. I still hold those values deeply within.
  • Motivated. I am one of those make it happen kind of guys. I don’t believe in a lot of talk. I believe in making it happen. The quicker a problem that arises is solved, the quicker we can move on to other issues that need to be addressed.
  • Leadership. I am a leader in many capacities. I am a father, a husband, an Elder, a coach, and a person who believes in the welfare others.
