Cocky and BP Volunteers Read to Cainhoy Elementary Students

cocky CAINHOY, S.C.–Students from the University of South Carolina, BP Cooper River employees and Gamecock mascot, “Cocky” joined forces recently at Cainhoy Elementary School for a United Way Day of Caring event that highlights the importance of literacy for elementary-aged students.

BP volunteers read stories in kindergarten through third-grade classrooms until approximately 1:00 PM.

At 1:00 PM, Cocky and USC students arrived at Cainhoy in the “Reading Express” bus and joined BP employees in an assembly to read to the children while Cocky helped the children understand the importance of life-long reading in a fun and interactive session.

All the children were given books to take home as reminders of their visit.

To date, BP America has provided more than $150,000 in funding to Cocky’s Reading Express, most recently donating $25,000 for the program to redesign the exterior of their bus for the CRE 10th anniversary.
