BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–An Atlanta-area prosecutor said Thursday he will seek an indictment of a police officer who fatally shot an unarmed naked man originally from Moncks Corner last year.
DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said he plans to ask a grand jury to indict Officer Robert Olsen of the DeKalb County Police Department.
James is accused of shooting 27-year-old Anthony Hill, a graduate of Berkeley High School, on March 9 while responding to a call of a man behaving erratically outside a suburban Atlanta apartment complex.
According to WSB-TV, James will seek an indictment Jan. 21 on two counts of felony murder, two counts of violation of oath of office, one count of aggravated assault and one count of making a false statement.
“When the male saw the officer, he charged, running at the officer,” DeKalb County Director of Public Safety Cedric Alexander said shortly after the shooting. “The officer called to him to stop, while stepping backward. He then drew his weapon and fired two shots.”
Hill, an Afghanistan War veteran, was wandering naked outside his Chamblee residence, driven by an adverse reaction to medication he was taking for bipolar disorder, friends told The AJC.
Because the investigation is ongoing, DeKalb County police spokesman Maj. Stephen Fore will not comment on the case.
Alexander said Olsen is on leave until further notice.
He is a seven-year veteran of the DeKalb force.
