GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–As part of their Home Fire Campaign, the American Red Cross and Goose Creek Rural Fire Department will be visiting homes in the Beverly Hills community to teach people how to be prepared for home fires and installing free smoke alarms where needed.
Each year, South Carolina ranks within the top ten states for home fire deaths per capita. The Palmetto S.C. Region of the Red Cross assists more than 7,100 people a year who are victims of disasters, primarily home fires.
The smoke alarm blitz in the Beverly Hills area of Goose Creek will take place on Saturday, January 16, 2016.
Teams of Red Cross volunteers and local firefighters will be going door-to-door, meeting with families to test and install smoke alarms, helping them create a home fire escape plan.
They will also discuss the importance of having everyone in the household know what to do in case of a fire.
This important event is one of the ten smoke alarm blitzes across the state over the next eight days in recognition of MLK Day of Service.
