Stratford Educator Named “Teacher of the Year” by S.C. Council for Exceptional Children

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Donna Staller, Special Education Lead Teacher at Stratford High School, has been named the South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children’s Exceptional Educator of the Year.

The award is given in recognition of educators’ exemplary performance as special education teachers, their ability to creatively inspire students through innovative methods of instruction, their involvement with professional organizations and their demonstration of leadership within schools and communities.

Director of the Office of Special Services for Berkeley County School District, Dr. Kelly Wulf, said, “Ms. Staller’s knowledge of special education policy, her students’ needs, and her ability to ensure that appropriate accommodations are in place, make her an amazing advocate for her students, consistently pushing them to high expectations.”

A Team Leader and Department Head at Stratford High School for 11 years, Staller began teaching in Wilson, New York in 1990. At Stratford High since 1998, Staller has taught in a self-contained setting as well as a resource/strategies setting.

Heather Taylor, principal of Stratford High School, said, Because of Donna Stiller, our school is a place where all students, from the exceptional needs classroom to the AP classroom, have a voice and a place to not only fit in, but excel.  She truly is a shining star in our profession, possessing a boundless commitment to her students, Stratford High School and exceptional children.”

Staller was Stratford High’s Teacher of the Year in 2008, an active member of Berkeley County School District’s Teacher Forum from 2008 through 2010. She is Stratford’s Student Council Sponsor, a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, and an active member of Eutawville United Methodist Church where she currently.

Staller will be honored by her colleagues and receive her award at the South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children President’s Awards Luncheon on Friday, February 5, 2016, at 12:30 p.m. at the Hilton Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort.
