BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to Berkeley County Spokesperson Michael Mule, EMS director Steve Cotter turned in his resignation to human resources Thursday morning. It was accepted that afternoon.
Mule did not elaborate further as to the reason behind the resignation; however, sources tell The Berkeley Observer tension had been brewing for quite some time between Cotter and EMS employees.
This resignation reportedly comes after several workers had planned to meet with county council behind closed doors to discuss concerns and other work-related issues.
He replaced longtime EMS director Bob Mixter who resigned from his position in March 2014.
Cotter was hired three months later. However, his resignation comes less than two years on the job.
Prior to becoming EMS director for Berkeley County, Cotter served as the former head of Emergency Medical Services at Piedmont Hospital in Rock Hill. He has also directed EMS operations for Sedgwick County, Kansas and Laurens County, S.C. and was a shift commander in Greenville County, S.C.
