MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler has placed a resolution on Monday’s County Council meeting agenda that opposes the closing of Guantanamo Bay and opposes the transfer of terrorists to the Naval Brig in Hanahan.

“I am introducing this resolution for two reasons: the safety of the people of Berkeley County and the safety of the economy of Berkeley County,” said Peagler. “Closing the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility and relocating the terrorists to the Consolidated Naval Brig Charleston in Berkeley County would place our people and our economy in great danger. Passing this resolution will show that Berkeley County Government is unified in placing the safety of our county’s people and our county’s economy far above the political gamesmanship of President Obama.”

In addition to the opposition of closing Guantanamo Bay and relocating the terrorists, Peagler’s

resolution also would show that Council opposes the use of the United States Civilian Courts to prosecute the enemy combatants.

“As an attorney and Constitutional scholar, I understand without a shadow of a doubt that these terrorists should not be granted the same rights of American citizens,” said Peagler. “Thus, I strongly oppose the use of our civilian courts to prosecute them.”

The resolution has been placed on the agenda of the special full County Council meeting to be held on Monday, February 8, 2016. The scheduled committee meetings will begin at 6:30 PM, and the special full council meeting will follow. All meeting will be held in the Council Chambers of the Berkeley County Administration Building, located at 1003 Highway 52 in Moncks Corner.
