BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–A GoFundMe account has been set up for Cpl. Kimber Gist, a Berkeley County deputy shot multiple times while in the line of duty early Friday morning.
Since the page went live Saturday, nearly $2,400 dollars have been raised to help the dedicated deputy cover her medical expenses.
The page was created by Berkeley County 9-1-1- dispatcher, Jessica Litchfield, a close friend of Gist.
“We know she is constantly getting support, and everyone has shown so much love, but Kimber can also be a little stubborn when it comes to accepting donations,” stated Litchfield. “So her dispatchers have decided to start this GoFundMe page in honor of her We miss you and we wish you a speedy recovery!”
Organizers of the page hope to raise about $10,000.
“Deputy Gist, I don’t know you, personally. But you represent the best of Berkeley County,” wrote one donor, Suzi Yohe. “And as a resident I’d like to thank you for the devotion and bravery you displayed long before this incident. May you heal fully and quickly. May God love you and keep you.”
“Thank you for you dedication, bravery you are a true hero. I hope to be on the force with you or someone of your character one day down the road!” wrote another donor, Cameron Dail.
On Friday, Cpl. Kimber Gist was on patrol checking businesses on Redbank Road in the unincorporated area of Goose Creek. While patrolling, she radioed in a suspicious vehicle located behind the closed grocery store. Two people were inside the vehicle.
She then advised dispatchers about 15 minutes later that she had a person in custody and shortly after called out that they were involved in a fight.
The radio then lost contact with Gist. A citizen assisted the deputy and authorities were called as other units arrived on scene to assist. Cpl. Gist was wearing body armor and was shot eight times.
She was then rushed to the local hospital where she had undergone surgery and listed in serious but stable condition.
The suspect later identified as 36-year-old Travis Cantelle Smith was surrounded at a residence in North Charleston and later died of self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Cpl. Gist has been with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office for a little over two and a half years between the detention center, court security, and including road patrol for this past year.
